Mercury Take Advantage of Fast Start to Hold Off Sparks
The Mercury put together a complete performance on both ends of the floor in a tight battle against the Sparks. The Mercury were able to take advantage of a fast start to build a lead, but the Sparks kept chipping away and made things interesting in the second half. The Mercury were led by Diana Taurasi, who scored 25 points and dished out 6 assists. Brittney Griner added 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Skylar Diggins-Smith chipped in with 18 points and 8 assists. The Sparks were led by Nneka Ogwumike, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Candace Parker added 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Kristi Toliver chipped in with 14 points. The Mercury took advantage of a fast start, jumping out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter. The Sparks were able to close the gap to 29-22 at the end of the first quarter, but the Mercury pushed their lead back to 45-35 at halftime.The Sparks made a push in the second half, cutting the Mercury lead to 60-58 with just over 5 minutes to play. However, the Mercury were able to hold on for the win, thanks to some key plays from Taurasi and Griner.
The Mercury's win improved their record to 15-6, while the Sparks fell to 10-11. The Mercury will be back in action on Tuesday, September 20, when they host the Atlanta Dream. The Sparks will be back in action on Wednesday, September 21, when they host the Dallas Wings.
